Chief Technology Officer
Department: Epoch AI
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Remote
Reporting To: Jaime Sevilla
Compensation: $200,000 - $300,000 / year
Description
Epoch AI is seeking a Chief Technology Officer to align our tech stack with our organization's long-term goals. Responsibilities will include managing a team of 3-5 engineers, and overseeing our website development, databases, and AI evaluation infrastructure.
About the role
Please do not include a cover letter, photograph, or headshot of yourself, or any personal information that is not relevant to the role. Applications are rolling.
Epoch AI is seeking a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead our engineering team. As CTO, you will help shape our strategic direction and ensure the alignment of our tech stack—including the Epoch AI website, databases, data collection systems, and AI evaluation infrastructure—with the organization's broader mission and priorities. We are rapidly growing, and our impact depends on robust, well-maintained software to help us reach key decision-makers and the public. We need a CTO who can ensure our technology supports our ambitious growth and publication objectives.
Day-to-day responsibilities will include leading a team of software and infra engineers to develop and maintain our website, benchmark pipeline, and benchmarking projects. You will be asked to mentor engineers, identify and lead new priorities, make and shepherd high-level decisions about our tech stack, and occasionally code and review code yourself. You will oversee and potentially expand our engineering team, fostering technical excellence and agility, and ensuring our infrastructure scales effectively as we grow. You will collaborate closely with leadership, researchers, designers, and stakeholders to translate organizational goals into clear technical roadmaps. You should be experienced in full-stack development, comfortable managing a team, and deeply interested in Epoch’s mission.
This role reports directly to Jaime Sevilla, Director of Epoch AI. This is a full-time and fully remote role; however, a successful candidate will be required to maintain overlap in working hours with both UTC and UTC–8 timezones, since we have a global team spread out across these timezones.
- Manage and mentor a team of 3–5 engineers, helping them set priorities, develop best practices, and improve their technical skills.
- Develop and communicate a clear technical strategy aligned with Epoch AI’s long-term mission. Work closely with leadership to translate organizational goals into a clear and actionable software engineering roadmap.
- Oversee architecture, infrastructure, and security across Epoch AI's technology stack, including web platforms, databases, benchmarking systems, and internal tools.
- Make strategic technology, personnel, and budget decisions, ensuring efficient resource allocation and hiring as required.
- Lead the engineering team to think beyond immediate tasks, encouraging decisions that support long-term scalability, maintainability, and future growth, while ensuring lean execution and fast delivery cycles.
- Guide the team in developing interactive data visualization and related tools to support lean research publication workflows.
What We Are Looking For
Requirements:
- Significant management/leadership experience in a technical role (4+ years strongly preferred). Demonstrated success scaling and managing engineering teams and infrastructure in rapidly growing environments.
- Exceptional technical expertise as a software engineer, with a track record of delivering high-quality, impactful engineering projects and deep familiarity with best practices in software development.
- Strong background in system architecture, cloud infrastructure, data engineering, and managing diverse technology stacks.
- Ownership mindset—you can drive high-level planning while also being comfortable with hands-on execution, obsessing over every detail and taking initiative to do whatever is needed to get things done.
- Deep interest in Epoch AI’s mission to investigate the future and impact of AI.
Nice to have:
- Experience using data visualization libraries (e.g., Pyplot, Plotly, D3.js).
- Deep familiarity with Epoch AI’s mission and our research on the trajectory of AI.
- Occasional schedule flexibility. Our research team is global, and sometimes coordination needs pop up outside regular hours. We fully encourage taking time off in lieu to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
If you don’t tick all these boxes but think you would be a great fit, please apply anyway!
What We Offer
- Annual salary between $200,000 and $300,000 USD, depending on the requirements that are met.
- Salaries are not restricted to USD, and contracts and payments are usually in local currencies. Conversions are based on one-year average exchange rates.
-
Fully remote environment, including flexible work hours and schedules.

- Generous paid time off (PTO) leave, including:
- 30 days off per year minimum, with no specific limit on paid time off per year.
- Unlimited personal and sick leave
- Parental leave—up to 6 months of a combination of paid and unpaid parental leave during the first 2 years after child's birth or adoption.
-
A flexible and generous expense policy for you to spend on equipment and a large range of productivity tools or learning/development opportunities you might find valuable.
-
Paid work trips, including 3 staff retreats per year and relevant conferences.
- Access to our very well-equipped offices in Berkeley, California, including paid meals, snacks, gym, and more.
- Other benefits as allowed at the discretion of Epoch AI’s leadership and local availability.
- A supportive and energized team that is excited about the work we are doing and our mission.
- Please email [email protected] if you have any questions about this role, accessibility requests, or if you want to request an extension to the deadline.
- While we welcome applicants from all time zones, we prefer candidates who can maintain significant overlap with UTC–8 (Pacific Time), as most of our staff work in this time zone.
- Please submit all of your application materials in English and note that we require professional-level English proficiency.
- For this position we prefer candidates who can travel: we hold three retreats per year to which attendance is strongly encouraged.
- Epoch is committed to building an inclusive, equitable, and supportive community for you to thrive and do your best work. We’re committed to finding the best people for our team, so please don’t hesitate to apply for a role regardless of your age, gender identity/expression, political identity, personal preferences, physical abilities, veteran status, neurodiversity or any other background.
