Who we are

We are an organisation that exists to drive progress. That's the “red thread” that connects everyone at The Economist Group (TEG). Our businesses share a devotion to innovation, independence and rigour in their fields of expertise. We empower people to understand and tackle the critical challenges and changes facing the world. Our analytical rigour, global expertise and evidence-based insights enable individuals and organisations to make sense of these shifts and chart a course through them.

We deliver analysis and insights in many formats to subscribers and clients in 170 countries through our four businesses, The Economist, Economist Impact, Economist Intelligence and Economist Education, which uphold our global reputation for excellence and integrity.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Head of Content for Sustainability and Infrastructure Events to lead the editorial direction of our global events portfolio within these critical pillars. This role is responsible for shaping the narrative on how the world builds a sustainable future, working at the intersection of policy, finance, and technology.

You will lead a high-performing programming team to design events—ranging from the Sustainability Week series to specialized infrastructure summits—that catalyze change. You will act as a bridge between commercial ambition and editorial integrity, ensuring every session meets the rigorous standards of The Economist.

Accountabilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Define the global content roadmap for Sustainability and Infrastructure events, identifying the "white space" in the market to ensure Economist Impact remains the premier forum for these topics.
  • Editorial Excellence: Work closely with the Executive Editor and thematic leads to ensure all programs are research-led, objective, and intellectually provocative.
  • Commercial Partnership: Collaborate with the business development team to pitch sophisticated, content-rich commercial proposals to corporates, NGOs, and governments.
  • Team Management: Mentor and manage a team of program editors and freelancers, fostering deep subject matter expertise in areas like ESG, circular economy, and smart infrastructure.
  • Speaker Curation: Oversee the recruitment of world-class speakers—from ministers and CEOs to leading scientists—ensuring diverse and high-calibre representation on all stages.
  • Product Innovation: Develop new event formats (e.g., closed-door roundtables, digital deep-dives) that address complex infrastructure and climate challenges.

Experience, Skills, and Professional Attributes

  • Significant Events Experience: Strong experience working in a commercial events business, where you have managed other team members
  • Domain Expertise: Significant experience in content creation or editorial work specifically within Sustainability, Energy, or Infrastructure. Or a passion for the subject of sustainability.
  • Commercial Acumen: A proven track record of working with sales teams to secure high-value partnerships through compelling content propositions.
  • Leadership: Experience managing events content teams and external contributors, with a knack for nurturing talent in a fast-paced environment.
  • Brand Alignment: A deep understanding of The Economist’s values and the ability to translate complex data into engaging live experiences.
  • Communication: Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to "interrogate" a topic to find a unique angle.
  • Resilience: A calm, authoritative presence when dealing with high-level stakeholders and tight production deadlines.
