Managing Counsel, Rights Protection:

The Managing Counsel, Rights Protection will be an integral part of the legal team, working closely with the Head of Rights Protection and broader rights protection and legal team. This position will (1) help lead LA28’s physical ambush and rights protection efforts, including in relation to the organization’s clean venue processes and strategies; (2) develop and implement education around Olympic and Paralympic intellectual property; (3) advise multiple stakeholders on a variety of legal, intellectual property, and clean venue issues; (4) generally support on legal matters across the organization, particularly in relation to intellectual property and rights protection. This position will report to the Associate General Counsel & Head of Rights Protection.   

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategies around monitoring of physical ambush (including but not limited to clean venue, out-of-home billboards, signage, and more), including roadmaps, playbooks, and scenario planning  
  • Draft and issue cease-and-desists and takedowns for physical ambush cases 
  • Work closely with other LA28 functional areas to lead a clean venue working group, including leading clean venue audits  
  • Work closely with the IOC on clean venue guidance  
  • Work closely with external law enforcement and government partners to put in place processes for physical ambush monitoring and enforcement   
  • Work closely with other LA28 functional areas and the IOC to develop and implement Games-time clean venue program  
  • Liaise with our sponsor, licensing, ticketing, and hospitality teams to protect the rights of our official partners  
  • Develop and deliver both internal and external education regarding protection of Olympic & Paralympic intellectual property 
  • Manage integrity and enforcement program around Olympic and Paralympic intellectual property  
  • Steady stream of self-directed analytical work, including preparing, reviewing and negotiating all varieties of legal documents, policies, and other strategic projects 
  • Keep current on industry trends and best practices, especially evolving laws and regulations around intellectual property and brand protection  
  • Support on other projects, assignments, and negotiations as may be requested by the Associate General Counsel & Head of Rights Protection and other senior legal team members 

Background & Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in legal, rights/brand protection, and/or intellectual property matters required.  
  • Prior in-house experience with sports properties a plus.

  • Excellent analytical skills; capable of identifying and prioritizing issues and providing alternative solutions.   
  • Excellent project and time management skills and ability to manage and prioritize changing workloads to meet deadlines.   
  • Consistently able to make sense of complex and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve issues.   
  • Consistently able to adapt approach and demeanor in real time to match the shifting demands of different situations.   
  • Positive and team-oriented, with a demonstrated commitment to co-creation and collaborative decision-making.    
  • High level of personal integrity and professional ethics; ability to maintain confidentiality. 

Education:

  • Undergraduate degree and Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA accredited law school required.  
  • License to practice law in CA, be in good standing with the California State Bar and have the ability to practice law in California.  

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Local candidates preferred.  
  • Ability to work on-site in an open office environment, based in Los Angeles, CA   
  • The majority of work will be conducted in an office setting, requiring extended periods of time using computers, phones, and other office equipment 
  • Hours of work may vary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak event periods.

The annual base salary range for this position is $160,000-$175,000. The pay scale provided is the range that LA28 reasonably expects to pay as starting base compensation for this role. All LA28 compensation remains subject to final determination based on individual candidate qualifications, experience, or other reasonable criteria consistent with LA28’s operational business needs and applicable law.
