Terms of Reference

The intern will work under the supervision of the Senior Protection Officer and the RiMAP focal point. Key duties include:

• Conduct a desk review of national legislation, policies, regulations, administrative directives, and relevant case law relating to the rights of forcibly displaced and stateless persons in Zimbabwe and Malawi.
• Identify legal instruments not yet available on Refworld and assist in uploading these documents, in line with UNHCR guidance.
• Review existing Zimbabwe and Malawi content in the RiMAP platform and support the analysis of all eleven rights categories (Asylum, Documentation, Education, Family Life, Freedom of Movement, Health, Housing, Land & Property, Liberty & Security of Person, Nationality & Facilitated Naturalisation, Social Protection, and Work & Workplace Rights).
• Draft concise summaries and analyses using RiMAP’s structured legal analytical framework, linking findings to domestic legal provisions and international standards.
• Identify practical gaps, implementation challenges, and areas requiring further clarification.
• Assist in preparing the draft rights analysis for UNHCR review and incorporate feedback.
• Upload approved analysis into RiMAP and support validation processes.
• Participate in regular check-in meetings and flag issues, delays, or technical challenges.
• Provide feedback on RiMAP workflows and tools to help improve future iterations of the platform.

Minimum qualifications required.
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO ; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR .
• Candidates with previous UNHCR Internship experience must not have exceeded the maximum total cumulative full-time internship duration of eight (8) months.

Desirable qualifications and skills
• Currently studying or recently graduated in Law, Public Policy, International Relations, Human Rights, or a related field.
• Strong interest in refugee protection, statelessness, and international human rights.
• Ability to read, interpret, and summarise legal texts.
• Strong research and analytical skills, with attention to detail.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and ask for clarification when needed.
• Familiarity with online legal databases or document-management platforms is an asset.
• Experience in comparative legal analysis or policy research is an advantage.
