We’re keen to hire a talented Writer to join our Society, Safety and Responsibility (SSR) external communications team. The SSR communications team is dedicated to cementing trust and confidence in Google DeepMind (GDM) as the leader ushering AGI safely and responsibly. We operate at the critical junction of technology and society, covering a broad mandate that includes safety and responsibility (cybersecurity, model safety, and AI ethics), public policy, and AGI readiness. Our mission is to articulate how we identify risks, mitigate potential harms, and ensure our technologies benefit humanity.

The role

We are looking for an exceptional writer and communicator to join our team in Mountain View or New York, reporting to the Society, Safety and Responsibility communications lead. In this role, you will be responsible for creating a wide range of written material to clarify our approach to AI safety and AGI preparedness for key opinion formers and the public. 

As a key member of our Society, Safety and Responsibility comms team, you will partner closely with our Safety, Ethics, and Policy teams to translate rigorous technical safety evaluations and policy positions into clear, trustworthy communications. You will not just be reporting on safety work; you will be a contributor to the global conversation on what it means to build AGI responsibly via blogs, op-eds, talking points, speeches, case studies, social media and more.

Key responsibilities

  • Safety & Responsibility: In collaboration with colleagues, document and explain our work in model safety, AI ethics, and responsibility in ways that are clear and accessible to a wide global audience.
  • AGI Readiness: Articulate for societal leaders and the general public our long-term vision for how and why AGI will benefit humanity; explain how we assess and mitigate AGI risks; and clarify our deployment policies. 
  • Regulation and governance: Ensure that our views on regulation and AI governance are shared clearly and consistently across all of our written materials and communications.
  • Translation and Clarity: Synthesize dense technical information (e.g., model architectures, safety methodologies, red-teaming results, evaluation benchmarks) into clear, concise content that is suitable for technical and generalist audiences, and which builds trust without oversimplifying the challenges.
  • Manage a multi-format, multi-platform editorial pipeline: Develop editorial strategy and manage production across multiple formats and platforms.  Draft all communications in line with Google DeepMind editorial principles and styles. Manage approvals and post content including GDM blogs, corporate and executive social media, op-eds, speeches, video explainers etc.

About you

In order to set you up for success as a Society, Safety  & Responsibility - Writer / Communicator at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • Experience: 5+ years in policy communications, technical writing, or journalism, with a specific focus on AI safety / responsibility , technology policy, cybersecurity. Experience with storytelling and content creation across different media -- multimedia, visual storytelling, social media, blogs is preferred.  Strong writing and research skills, with an emphasis on quality and detail. Fluency in use of AI tools to research and accelerate your work is a plus. 
  • Technical Fluency: A strong ability to read and understand technical research papers. You do not need to be an engineer, but you must be comfortable with the terminology of machine learning and frontier AI. You must have the ability to convey complex technical information in clear, creative and compelling ways to engage with a range of audiences 
  • Portfolio: A portfolio of writing that demonstrates the ability to explain complex topics with clarity and elegance.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple writing projects simultaneously with tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $134,000  - 196,000+ bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
