Manager, Torchbearer

The Torch Relays (RLY) functional area is responsible for the planning & execution of LA28’s Olympic & Paralympic Torch Relays.They arekeynationalengagement &promotional tools,creating an inclusive and accessible Games experience for people of all backgrounds and abilities and developing a sense of excitement and anticipation across the country leading up to the Olympic & Paralympic Opening Ceremonies.  

At the heart of the Torch Relays are thousands of Torchbearers that are selected to carry the Olympic and Paralympic flames through their community. The Torchbearer Manager is responsible for shaping the Torchbearer program, including the selection of LA28 Torchbearers, including high-profile individuals. The ideal candidate brings expertise in volunteer or mass participation programs, experience collaborating with high-pofile individuals and demonstrates meticulous planning skills.  

This role will report to the Director of Operations, Torch Relays. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop the LA28 Torchbearer strategy for the Torch Relays
  • Work cross-functionally with other LA28 functional areas (FAs) to coordinate the delivery of the LA28 Torchbearer nomination and selection process  
  • Partner with the Torch Relays Production team to deliver a consistent, high-quality experience for all Torchbearers  
  • Coordinate with external stakeholders (including Partners) to ensure strategic alignment on their Torchbearer selection programs  
  • Lead the creation and delivery of LA28’s high-profile Torchbearer program, managing all aspects from concept to execution  
  • Support and coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure timely and effective Torchbearer and other public announcements for the Torch Relays  
  • Manage operational budget, ensuring efficient use of resources and adherence to financial constraints  

This role will work closely with the Director of Operations, Torch Relays to ensure all elements of the Torchbearer program deliver the best possible experience for Torchbearers and stakeholders throughout the planning and delivery.  

Background & Requirements:

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in managing volunteers or mass participation events 
  • Proven success managing large-scale scheduling and logistics across multiple locations  
  • Experience working cross-functionally with marketing, production, HR, finance and legal teams  

Expectations:

  • Track record of successfully delivering large-scale, multi-faceted and operationally challenging event production
  • Ability to self-manage multiple projects and tight timelines 
  • In-depth understanding of the live events industry, including logistical, technical, and regulatory considerations 
  • Strong ability to navigate and align cross-functional stakeholder interests 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels 
  • Understanding of and sensitivity tovariouscultures and traditions

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work on-site in an open office environment, based in Los Angeles, CA
  • Hours of work may vary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak event periods 
  • Willingness to travel and work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends 
  • 2025-2027: approx. 30-40% annually for stakeholder meetings, observation opportunities, site-checks, etc. 
  • 2028: expectation to be on the road with the Torch Relays

The annual base salary range for this position is $88,000.00 - $115,000.00. The pay scale provided is the range that LA28 reasonably expects to pay as starting base compensation for this role. All LA28 compensation remains subject to final determination based on individual candidate qualifications, experience, or other reasonable criteria consistent with LA28’s operational business needs and applicable law.
