The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

At the heart of our strategy is the recognition that advances in health often come from unexpected sources, and that curiosity-driven discovery research is vital to understanding how life works. Discovery research is therefore a key part of the Wellcome strategy; providing researchers from different backgrounds the resources they need to take on big questions and overcome barriers to progress.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

To deliver Wellcome’s funding in discovery research, we are looking for a Funding Manager to work in our Cells, Systems and Tools team, which is part of the wider Research Funding team.

What will I be doing?

Your task is to ensure that grant applications are managed, reviewed and awarded in a timely and efficient way. You’ll be the person our community of researchers will turn to for guidance and advice. You’ll have ownership of your own portfolio of grants from our suite of funding schemes, giving you exposure to innovative proposals from leading academics. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to be an integral part of a team ensuring that world-class research happens.

As a Funding Manager, you will:

  • Manage a portfolio of grants throughout the grant lifecycle including the delivery of due diligence, expert review, notification of decision and award of grant applications within established deadlines and according to defined standards and controls.

  • Provide expert advice, and guidance on grant applications and awards to existing and potential grant holders.

  • Work with grant holders and university research offices to ensure the smooth and effective management of awarded grants.

  • Contribute to funding committee operations, including management of scoring and budget spread sheets, and taking minutes, as appropriate.

  • Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation.

  • Collaborating with other teams such as Discovery Research, Data for Science and Health, Finance and Legal, as required.

To be successful in this role you will have a degree in a relevant subject, experience of the academic research environment and an understanding of the role of Wellcome in the research funding ecosystem.

We are looking for someone who is highly organised, and able to prioritise and manage their time to meet deadlines. You’ll have excellent stakeholder management skills and be able to build strong relationships, internally and externally.

The ideal candidate will have an interest in supporting world-leading research and a desire to join a team of research management professionals.
