Position

InnovateEDU is seeking a Policy Intern to support the implementation of InnovateEDU’s 2025 policy priorities. These include engaging in policy research and writing, analyzing federal and state legislation, and supporting cross-sector coalitions focused on education research and data, workforce readiness, and responsible AI in education.

Responsibilities

  • Research: Conduct policy scans of federal and state legislative activity related to education data, AI, and workforce development; Track relevant federal and state rulemakings and grant opportunities
  • Writing: Support the development of policy briefs, memos, and recommendations; Assist in the preparation of responses to Requests for Information (RFIs) and Requests for Comment (RFCs), federal consultations, or public comments
  • Analysis: Attend and summarize relevant webinars, hearings, and coalition meetings; Analyze proposed laws, policies, and regulations pertaining to education, education technology, data security, and research 
  • Coordination and Project Management: Support InnovateEDU’s coalition-building and stakeholder engagement efforts; Collaborate with staff across programs to align policy goals with implementation work

Skills and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program in public policy, education, political science, or a related field
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage time effectively
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in tools such as Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Zoom, and Asana
  • Prior experience with policy, advocacy, or education organizations (preferred but not required)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to learn

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this internship, the intern will have:

  • Gained experience in drafting and submitting federal policy responses (e.g., RFIs, public comments, proposals)
  • Developed skills in analyzing legislative text, executive orders, and regulatory guidance
  • Learned how to build and manage AI-enabled policy tools (e.g., custom GPTs for policy analysis)
  • Strengthened your ability to track and synthesize federal and state policy activity into actionable insights
  • Experienced working within coalitions and cross-sector partnerships focused on advancing responsible and safe AI, broadband connectivity, data security and privacy, and career pathways 
  • Practiced balancing independent work with collaborative teamwork in a professional nonprofit environment

Schedule

This is a remote, unpaid position with an expected schedule of approximately 20 hours per week. The Policy Intern is expected to develop a set schedule at the beginning of their internship and have it approved by the Policy Associate. The internship duration is typically one semester and can be extended. InnovateEDU is happy to support responsibilities and expectations for course credit supervision so that the internship may be used for practicum, course, or capstone credit. Upon request, letters of recommendation will be written for those who have demonstrated dedication and contributed successfully to the organization
